James Macintyre was in business with William Sadler Kennedy at the Washington Works, in March 1854.... From 1860 Macintyre carried on the business without Kennedy, and traded under the name of James Macintyre and Company. William Moorcroft worked as a designer for Macintyre from 1898 to 1913... William Moorcroft and James Macintyre & Co. The art pottery department was closed in 1913 so that the company could concentrate on making electrical insulators and since 1928 nothing but industrial wares has been produced.. Manufactured by the James MacIntyre & Co.

And designed by William Moorcroft - made in Burslem, England - timeline is circa 1894 - 1928.. William Moorcroft's earliest pieces at Macintyre were the Aurelian Ware transfer pieces that eventually evolved into the Florian Ware designs.. This gorgeous earthenware Aurelian ware piece has the slight domed cover with pointed finial over a shallow bowl is flanked by strap handles on a long stem with burnt orange/red painted foliate banded motif on a gilded blue background. The printed brown backstamp mark to the base - the Macintyre JM & Co - BURSLEM - ENGLAND - marks with "& Co" are from circa 1867 until 1894.. When the " Ltd" was added circa 1894 until 1928..

Approximate measurements are 8.5 inches height including lid from finial to base - 7 1/8 inches top rim to base (exclusive of lid) - 4 3/8 inch top rim diameter - 3.25 inch base diameter. Light signs of previous use SHOULD be expected consistent with age and previous ownership...

Wonderful antique condition with some gold wear (rubbings) in areas... The bold colorings look wonderful.. Moorcroft was born in Burslem, Staffordshire. He studied art at Burslem then in London and Paris. He experimented with his own pottery designs around 1896 while working for James Macintyre & Co Ltd.

And produced Aurelian Ware which was partly decorated with transfers. And partly painted by hand. Ed glazes and used oriental shapes and decorations. Some of his techniques were closely guarded trade secrets. He then developed his famous Florian Ware, with heavy slip.

And a translucent glaze which produces brilliance of colour... Made him "Potter to the Queen" through a Royal Warrant. Which was stamped on the pottery.

His son, Walter joined the company when he was twenty, and took over the management of the pottery in 1945 just before William's death.
