The box is done in the "Pine Needle" desk set pattern. The patina on the metal is the most desirable Green/Brown. The stained glass is the green/white opalescent Favrile glass.
The box is a good size as it is 6 3/4" wide, 2 15/16 tall and 3 15/16" deep. This utility box is also called a deep cigarette box or humidor. It displays an acid etched Pine Needle overlay pattern on green/white opalescent glass.
It has 2 rows of wonderful beading along the top and a two rows along the bottom that are closer together. It sits on four bun style feet. This is the most desirable of the Tiffany Grapevine Boxes as it was considered the fanciest! The Patina is extremely nice! I used dish soap and water with a toothbrush and gently cleaned and revealed this wonderful patina that Tiffany Studios was famous for. The inside shows the cedar liner on the underside top lid as well as a cedar box inside of the glass box. This was specifically meant for cigarettes to keep them fresher and not allow tobacco to stick to the side walls of the glass. This box is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips to any of the glass. The hinge is in excellent working condition as the cover opens and closes with ease. The inside cedar top liner shows some wear but is still in great shape for its age. This utility box is signed on the bottom with the "Tiffany Studios New York" impressed mark along one side and the pattern number "816" impressed just to the right.
This number is normally associated with the small jewelry box. The size is actually the same as the jewelry box but it it not quite as deep. The jewelry box is 4 1/4 deep as to allow for the size of the trays.
The box is 5/16 smaller in depth. This box will not accommodate the velvet trays. There is no doubt that this was originally made as a deep cigarette box as the box and liner in the lid fits perfectly.I believe the number should be 815 and is possible there was an error in marking the shape number. This may be the only example of the deep cigarette box in this size marked shape number 816. This would make this box extremely rare! This is a very nice utility box in better than excellent condition.
When these are found there is usually some kind of damage to the glass or it is missing its cedar liners or a foot. I believe the Pine Needle pattern to have been one of the first of the fancy goods product lines made at Tiffany Studios. Tiffany started using a 3 digit numbering system for his fancy goods after 1902. No store lets you out of the building with the merchandise unless it is paid for. Maybe if enough of you do this, they will change their policy.
