This is a very desirable piece of the Grapevine desk set patterns. The patina is extremely nice as it is the green brown with some reddish highlights! It still retains its original stepped clear glass well insert.
The inkwell is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips to any of the glass. The glass insert is also in very good condition with no issues to report. The hinge is in excellent condition as the cover opens and closes with ease. The inkwell insert has a smooth bottom. This one is signed "The Davis" with patent dates above it from 1898 and 1899.Part of the mark goes off the edge of the bottom. The inkwell is signed on the underside bottom edge with the impressed mark into the metal that reads "Tiffany Studios New York" along with the model or shape number "844". I believe the Grapevine pattern to have been the first of the Fancy Goods product lines made at Tiffany Studios. Typically there is some ink stains on the inside cover or the top. This inkwell appears to have never been used.
Tiffany started numbering his desk set pieces usually with a 3 digit number after 1902. CLEMENTS ANTIQUES OF NEW HAMPSHIRE STOREFRONT. Please wait for my Invoice before paying.
