This is an authentic Royal Doulton Lambeth stoneware jug dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, produced in England and marked on the base with the Royal Doulton backstamp along with impressed factory numbers and decorator initials. It is beautifully made in the typical Lambeth manner, with raised Art Nouveau foliage motifs in relief and a rich marbled stoneware glaze body, finished with a deep cobalt blue collar at the rim.
The jug stands approximately 7.5 inches tall and is about 4.75 inches at its widest diameter. The rim has a factory-made notch and small drilled hole, both original to manufacture, which indicate that it originally had a fitted hinged lid - now missing. The jug displays very well and remains a fine example of Royal Doulton Lambeth stoneware. Historical Note - Royal Doulton.
The Doulton company was founded in 1815 by John Doulton and became one of Britain's most important ceramic manufacturers. Their Lambeth studio in London became world-famous for its art pottery, decorated by skilled designers and craftsmen who often added their initials to pieces.
In 1901 the firm was granted the Royal Warrant by King Edward VII, becoming Royal Doulton. Their Lambeth stoneware is highly collected today for its quality, artistry, and strong association with the great British art pottery movement. I aim to get your items to you as quickly as I can.
