Items for consideration are a Rare, Vintage, Matching, Pair of 10 inch tall Handcrafted and Hand-painted Porcelain Foo Dog Figurines from the Black Dynasty collection, produced during the period 1985 thru 2006, by the Herend Guild located in Hungary. Items are a Limited Edition; each is numbered, 15295 and 5308. The figurines are mirrow images of each other.
Figurine is signed by artist. The Foo Dogs are hand painted in the Siang Noir (SN) Black decor. Siang Noir is a famous classic Herend Chinoiserie Far Eastern pattern. In the mid 19th century. The decorative scheme consists of a glossy black background with white, pink, and yellow daisy blossoms positioned across the body of the figurine. The individual blossoms are separated by a space of approximately 3 1/4 inch and are connected together by light green vines and buds (see photos #10 & 11). Tails and ears are a light green in color with gilt gold trim.
There is extensive use of hand painted 24K gilt gold accents on the feet, back, neck and head. The most outst anding feature of this pair of figurines is the elaborate, labor intensive, hand painting effort by the most experienced, creative and unequaled of porcelain artists, residing in the Herend organization. The sheer attention to detail is very obvious, even to the casual observer. A unique aspect of the saturated tones of the SD decor is that the pattern is applied with enamel colors. Enamel painting is an exacting process, in that, the density of enamel paint requires the application of many more layers than with normal paints, in order to create the rich pigmentation unique to enamel finishes. It is a balancing act of beauty versus technical constraints. Because if only one of the layers is applied unevenly, it can effect the adherence of the paint to the piece and an overall uneven presentation of the product. This requires Herend to assign only their most skilled, knowledgeable, and technically competent artists to the finishing of these enameled figurines. In the Orient there are p.Owerful mythic protective benefits associated with the Foo Dog statues. They were used in pairs as protective'Lion Dogs' in front of houses and buildings as a symbol defending gates and doors from evil influences.
The name Foo Dog or Fu Dog relates to Buddha or Prosperity. Since 1826, Herend has created timeless designs with unsurpassed craftsmanship and artistry. These exquisite treasures make lovely collectibles and heirlooms for generations to come. Height: 10 inch (25.5 cm).Width: 4.75 inch (12.0 cm). Length: 10.25 inch (26.0 cm).
