Art Nouveau 9ct rose gold aquamarine and pearl pendant

  

Enchanting 9ct rose gold Art Nouveau pendant set with seed pearls and a gorgeous central aquamarine. Marked 9ct in the bale. A beautiful, wearable, piece of handmade jewellery from an especially stylish period of history. This is an original, genuine antique piece, supplied in a jewellery box that may not be original. We only include chains when they are original to the piece and this pendant arrived without so a chain is NOT included.

On the closest inspection you may notice that one small seed pearl is missing but we do not feel it detracts significantly from this lovely antique. Aquamarine comes from the Latin for seawater. It is said to prolong relationships and enhance the happiness of marriage. It is also said to protect against seasickness and keep sailors safe at sea. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March and 19th anniversaries. Seed Pearls are small natural pearls, usually less than 2mm in diameter.

The use of seed pearls in fine jewellery throughout the latter part of the 19th & early part of the 20th centuries was immensely popular. Elaborately decorated brooches, pendants, pins and earrings were very representative of fashion at the time. Pearls have an association with purity, chastity and delicacy. Pearl is the birthstone for June and 30th anniversaries.

Gold used in jewellery is an alloy of pure gold and various other metals to create different colours and degrees of strength. Rose gold is a mixture of yellow gold, copper and silver and when it comes to purity it is no different to yellow or white gold. It was popularised in the 19th century by the famous jeweller Carl Fabergé and highly prized by Russian nobility.
