The sterling silver in this piece has been arranged into the classic design of a Jerusalem cross, which consists of one larger cross surrounded by four smaller crosses to represent the five wounds of Christ. This style of cross can be dated back to the 11th century and became especially popular when it began to appear as the official arms of the crusader state, the Kingdom of Jerusalem, established by the Frankish knight, Godfrey of Bouillon. Adorning the face of the cross are rope twist designs which would have been crafted entirely by hand, as well as floral motifs, which also appear on the triangular bale and the back of the pendant. In the center of the cross is a large, emerald green, paste stone with an Old European cut. As the paste is semi-translucent, light is able to filter through the body of the stone and illuminate its rich green hue with gorgeous, eye catching sparkle. To keep the stone secure, it rests in a large sterling silver bezel, the perfect contrast to the vibrant green of the paste. Completing the pendant is a large floral bale, allowing it to be paired with a variety of antique chains. A beautiful example of the jewelry bought on Grand Tour holidays, this pendant would make an excellent addition to any antique jewelry collection. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. The Grand Tour was the standard European vacation of the Georgian and Victorian eras.

The opportunity it gave for studying culture, architecture and art made it a tradition, especially for the upper classes. The Grand Tour was popularized by the poet Lord Byron and the writer Mary Shelley, who was the author of Frankenstein. The Grand Tour was an opportunity for wealthy travelers to explore the world and experience different cultures over a 2 to 4-year period. And what better memento of this long trip than pieces of native souvenir jewelry such as Italian cameos, mosaic, and pietra dura. Pieces often had historical inspirations from the remnants of Pompeii to the pyramids of Egypt. Cultural learning was a focal point of the grand tour and the process of remembrance spilled over into jewelry souvenirs. French jeweler Georges Frédéric Strass created paste as an alternative to diamonds during the Georgian era. Leaded glass was cut and polished with a metallic powder until it shimmered brightly like a diamond in the light. These white diamante or strass stones were wildly popular with the glamorous Parisians, and eventually paste stones were colored to mimic other precious gemstones. Please take this into consideration before.
