Antique Hungarian Zsolnay Eosin Vase. This is a beautiful museum quality Art Nouveau Eosin Vase by Zsolnay in pristine condition!

The Zsolnay factory was established by Miklós Zsolnay (18001880) in Pécs, Hungary, to produce stoneware and other ceramics in 1853. In 1863, his son, Vilmos Zsolnay (18281900) joined the company and became its manager and director after several years. He led the factory to worldwide recognition by demonstrating its innovative products at world fairs and international exhibitions, including the 1873 World Fair in Vienna. The rich Eosin, iridescent coloring creates a standout piece of Zsolnay artistry. Depending on how the light hits the vase determines the hues that you will see on the surface. This spectacular vase with a Art Nouveau design is a definite collectors piece! 6.5 tall with a 4.5 diameter. Many Zsolnay ceramics are noted for the use of the eosin process that was introduced in 1893. The process results in a light red iridescence of the first prepared hue, hence the term eosin (Greek eos, flush of dawn).

Different eosin colors and processes were developed over time. The eosin-based iridescence became a favorite of art nouveau and Jugendstil artists, among them Sándor Apáti Abt, Lajos Mack, Géza Nikelszky, and József Rippl-Rónai. Zsolnay is marked with an series of numbers (usually 3 or 4) which related to a form book design. That number is a chronological number relating to a production date.

Example: an incised form number 782 indicated a production between 1873 and 1882; an incised form number 6105 indicates a production year for 1900. This particular vase has a clear mark on the base. The secret eosin glaze renders porcelain to appear iridescent metallic, in different colours that change with the angle of reflection. Typical colors include shades of green, red, blue, and purple.
